Prerequisites

All are welcome to attend the course, regardless of experience. However, the following recommendations will make the training significantly more productive:

Familiarity with Agile concepts and principles
Attended Leading SAFe® Certification Training or SAFe® Product Owner/Product Manager (POPM Certification) Training
Experience working in a SAFe environment

Duration: 90 minutes
Number of Questions: 45
Passing Score: 77%
Delivery: Web-based, closed book, no outside assistance, timed
Access: Practice and certification exams are available in your Scaled Agile Community portal under the course you’re attending.
Cost: Initial cost is included in the course registration fee if taken within 30 days of course completion.
Retake Fee: $50; $250 for SPCs
Retake Policy: First retake may be taken immediately after the first failed attempt. Second retake may be taken 10 days after the first retake. Third retake may be taken 30 days after the second retake. All subsequent retakes require a 30-day wait.

Module 1: Introducing Lean Portfolio Management

Apply the Lean-Agile Mindset and SAFe Principles to portfolio management
Realise the benefits of organising your portfolio around value
Identify the Development Value Streams within a portfolio

Module 2: Establishing Portfolio Strategy and Vision

In this module, you will learn how to:

Connect the portfolio to the Enterprise with Strategic Themes
Describe Strategic Themes with objectives and key results (OKRs)
Maintain the Portfolio Vision
Define the Value Streams and portfolio domain via the portfolio canvas
Understand the portfolio’s investment mix by horizon
Identify opportunities for the portfolio’s future state with SWOT
Express the future state as a Vision
Develop the portfolio Roadmap
Forecast portfolio Epics for roadmapping
Identify market rhythms and milestones
Identify valuable release windows using market rhythms

Module 3: Realising Portfolio Vision through Epics

In this module, you will learn how to:

Define portfolio Epics
Achieve the future state of the portfolio with Epics
Decompose portfolio Epics into programme or Solution Epics

Estimate Epic costs
Implement Epics and achieve the Vision using the SAFe Lean Startup Cycle

Module 4: Establishing Investment Funding

In this module, you will learn how to:

Establish Lean Budget Guardrails
Guide investments by horizons
Apply capacity allocation to optimise value and Solution integrity
Establish portfolio Epic thresholds
Use Participatory Budgeting in SAFe
Establish the total portfolio budget
Establish Value Stream budgets with participatory budgeting

Module 5: Managing Portfolio Flow

In this module, you will learn how to:

Establish flow with the Portfolio Kanban
Sequence Epics for implementation using WSJF
Sequence Epics for optimal economics
Calculate WSJF to sequence Epics
Manage portfolio flow

Module 6: Applying Agile Portfolio Operations

In this module, you will learn how to:

Coordinate Value Streams to create portfolio-level opportunities
Deploy and release portfolio work
Support programme execution and operational excellence
Measure and grow to improve LPM competency

In this module, you will learn how to:

Measure LPM performance

First-time attendees of SAFe courses get a 1-year Scaled Agile membership with course attendance. For attendees taking their second course or more, membership will not be extended as a result of taking another course. Once your membership expires, you will have a few options to renew your membership to maintain your active certifications. You can check out those options at the SAFe Membership FAQ.

What is the process to take the SSM Certification exam?

Learners can access their learning plans and exams after the instructor has marked their attendance about halfway through their class. The steps are as follows:

Login to the SAFe Community. If you do not remember your password, click the “Forgot Password” link to receive a reset email.
Select Learn > My Learning from the tabs.
Select “In Progress”
Select the class that you are looking for. You may have multiple In Progress.
The Exam is located at the bottom of the Learning Plan. You are required to complete all required items marked with red asterisks* before you can take the exam.
